Galway: Must-see and linger, or meh and pass through?

Interested in impressions of Galway as a place to spend time on a short (all too short) Ireland trip.

IN Rick's book, he makes Galway sound OK but not particularly special. For example, it's described as "the most easily accessible slice of Ireland's west coast." OK, but I'll be spending almost all my time on Ireland's west coast (about a week). He says it lacks sights, but makes up for that in ambiance: medieval streets, music, pubs, etc. But I'll be headed for Dingle and the southwest, so I'm guessing the ambiance and music will be better there.

We fly into Dublin, and plan to head straight to Galway (since its the most logical jumping off point for us on the west coast). From Galway I plan to go to the Aran Islands before heading south towards Dingle and beyond.

My first plan has been to land in Dublin, train or bus to Galway, arriving there late afternoon on our arrival day, walk around, spend the night. I was planning to spend all of the following day and another night in Galway, as we recover from jetlag and get our legs under us. After that, get up early morning on our second full day, and head to Inishmore, arriving there early (around 9 am). We would spend the whole day and night on Inishmore, sleeping there, get up very early the next morning for some photos before the day-trippers arrive, then depart back to the mainland late morning.

Now I'm wondering if I might be budgeting a wee bit too much time in Galway. Here's an alternative I'm now considering...

Same beginning: Land in Dublin, train or bus to Galway, arriving there late afternoon on our arrival day, walk around, spend the night. But get up the next day, check out of our B&B and just spend a few hours walking Galway's old center, then early afternoon head to Inishmore; we would spend the afternoon and night on Inishmore, spend all of the next day there too (2 nights, one full day plus a few hours on arrival and departure days). That way, we would essentially trade half a day and a night in Galway, for that same half a day and night on Inishmore. Daparture plan from Inishmore would be the same.

From what I'm reading in the book - and some opinions from visitors who were not entirely wowed by Galway - I'm thinking that on our too-short trip, I might rather have a little more time on Inishmore and would be willing to give up our second afternoon in Galway to get it.

We will have 3 nights in Dingle plus a full day in Dingle town plus one day going around the Dingle Peninsula, so I'm thinking I can get by with a bit less of Galway.

What did you think of Galway? If you already were planning one night in Galway and one night in Inishmore, and you had a third night to spend in either, where would you spend it?

Thanks.

I like your second plan the best. Galway is a great jumping off point to get to the Aran islands and it also has Shop street, which is a pedestrian only shopping area and is kinda fun to walk around. Lots of buskers keeping people entertained etc. We had just several hours in Galway and I felt that was enough. There is a river and if its a nice day, its pleasant to sit by the river and people watch. Lots of great restaurants too. My favorite town so far in Ireland after two visits is Dingle and I could stay there for a whole week and be happy. But, I still have not seen it all (like N. Ireland) and so there will be a third trip!
Have fun!

I agree, the 2nd option sounds better to me too. Galway is fun but you probably don't need that long there. Dingle was one of my favorites too and the peninsula is gorgeous!

Agree with the two other posters. We stopped for lunch in Galway and then took maybe an hour to walk down Key Street...cute shops and some street musicians, etc.

Wondering why you are flying in to Dublin if you are heading straight to Galway? Shannon is closer. Otherwise concur with other posters. Make haste thru Galway and enjoy the rest of the west coast.

Thanks, all - it seems unanimous, so I think I will go with the second option: limiting time in Galway, trading that for a bit more time on Inishmore.

Many good reasons. Yes, I know where Shannon is. There's a perfect nonstop flight from my home to Dublin; there is none to Shannon. Multiple other good reasons that I wont get into here. Flights are booked and I'm quite happy with them, it was a conscious, easy decision to fly through Dublin and one that I would absolutely make again. I'm sure Shannon makes sense for many people, it doesn't for us. Thanks.

I think you have made the right choice! Two nights on the Aran Islands definitely beats two nights in Galway.

It would be quite easy to wait to rent a car until after your time on the Islands. Easy direct bus connections from airport to Galway. Shuttle bus and ferry to Aran Islands and back. Then pick up your rental car for the Dingle portion.

That is indeed my plan - except, we will be taking the short flight to/from the islands, not the ferry. The flight is not expensive, and flying saves a few more hours we can spend there. My expectation is to be back in Galway around 11 am the day we depart from the island, pick up the car and hope to be on the road headed for Dingle by noon. Given the long days in midsummer when we're there, if all goes smoothly I figure we should have enough time for at least a brief blow-through The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher on the way to Dingle. If things don't go quite that efficiently, we can opt to skip The Burren/Cliffs of Moher, and head straight for Dingle, either way we should be there well before dark.

Of course, I do understand that weather can cause issues for the plane or the ferry, so will need to play it by ear a bit. But I'm starting to feel like the plan is shaping up nicely. Thanks all for the input.

I am in Dingle right now for 4 nights, and I don’t want to leave! I am staying out in the country about 10 minutes from Dingle. Such a gorgeous peninsula! Love, love, love it here ❤️

Galway is one of my favorite cities in Ireland and a center for music and art. I don't think you would go wrong to spend time there.
