Galway during the races - too busy?

Hi there,

I have booked my trip (Dublin, Kilkenny, Galway, Kildare and back to Dublin) and just noticed the Galway races start the first day I arrive in Galway. Now, I don't want to go to the races and wanted a nice quiet holiday. Are the autumn races very busy? Is it just the summer races that bring a ton of people out? If Galway's streets are going to be packed with people, I am going to go somewhere else. I can't find information about how busy the autumn races are - every picture/video I have found online seems to be from the summer races. Any advice?

If Galway proves to be too busy, any recommendations on where to go after Kilkenny?

Thank you,
Sarah

Well, you might consider the town of Clifden about an hour west of Galway - a pretty little village in its own right with some very scenic drives. Reasonably close to the ferry for a day trip out to the Aran Islands too.
Might also suggest the village of Cong about 40 minutes north of Galway... where "The Quiet Man" was filmed. It too is centered in a particularly scenic area, and if you're a fan of the movie you can spend a day or two searching out the old film locations.
