We will be traveling with our daughter and two grandchildren, ages 7 and 5 next August. I would like some suggestions on day trips and sightseeing that will keep the boys attention. My daughter mentioned Galloway. Is that a day trip?

Do you mean Galway over on the west coast? You can find interesting places closer. I imagine the boys would like to visit a castle or two. Look at Malahide Castle as a possible excursion from Dublin.
Met an Irish man on the plane over who insisted that we visit Powerscourt Gardens.
Lots of room for kids to roam and beautiful gardens and waters. We took a tour bus
from downtown Dublin.
Powerscourt Gardens is south of Dublin and Newgrange is north of the city. Both can be done as day trips. Google them and see it they hold any interest for your group.

Also, if you or your grandchildren are horse fans, the National Stud is not too far away.
