Footwear recommendations for June trip

What do you love for footwear on your Ireland trip? We plan to do a bit of light hiking/trekking off the beaten path. We expect rain/mud. We typically wear Merrill Moab (for her) and Keen Targhee (for him) hiking shoes, but those are geared for our Texas heat, not Irish cool & moisture. What are your favorites? Bonus if you include a picture or amazon link!

We just returned from 3 week safari in Africa, with several wet days. GoreTex! Don’t forget that in Ireland, if you go off the beaten path, you’ll also have sheep droppings to deal with, and these work well with deer/elk scat in Colorado, as well as hippo/elephant on the bit of walking we did (with armed guides) in Africa. These have also worked well the past summer/fall in Colorado.

If you already like the Merrells, I believe they make a Gor-Tex version of the Moabs. Seems likely they’d be the same fit.

No matter where I go or what the weather is, I wear mid-height waterproof lace-up hiking boots. They have helped to keep me from falling or turning an ankle many times over challenging terrain, including cobblestones. They are my primary shoes and I wear them everyday. My recent favorites are KEEN Terradoras.

I think the choice of socks is as important as the shoes. I wear Sockwell Moderate (15-20mmHg) Graduated Compression socks. These are my latest favorites, but they come in lots of patterns and colors. It's hard to imagine but their typical fiber content of about 32% Merino Wool, 31% Rayon from Bamboo, 32% Stretch Nylon and 5% Spandex in combination with my boots keep my feet warm or cool and dry.

When I'm in Ireland this summer, I'll be wearing these KEEN Terradora II Waterproof Mid Hiking Boots in the Majolica/Tapestry color. I bought mine on sale at REI in September 2021.

Just on Friday I picked up the same style in the Rhubarb/Jam color you can see listed as also on sale. Please note that the REI picture is not at all like the actual color which is this on Amazon.

Full disclosure, I also have them in the Canteen/Andorra color that I got through Amazon in January 2021. And an older version, the KEEN Terradora in Duck Green/Quiet Green which may be very hard to find. I got them from Amazon in February 2020.

The Rhubarb ones are made in Thailand and the others, which seem to be better quality, were made in China. The Rhubarb and Canteen colors came with KEEN anatomic fit inner soles and and the Duck Green and Majolica ones came with Fit Matters inner soles. They are all interchangeable and have arch supports, but the former are a softer foam and the latter are stiffer, especially in the arches.

KEENs are sold in lots of places. REI has more colors here that may or may not be on sale.

Thanks for all the input! Per Lo's suggestion, I'm going to try the KEEN Terradora II Waterproof Mid Hiking Boots. I was able to find them in my size on Amazon for only $109.

I brought my Keen Targhee II to Ireland in April 2019 and they were perfect.
