Flight from US to Dublin and than on to Portugal

My husband and I are traveling to Europe in July. Booked a flight to Dublin that arrives at 830AM (AerLingus). First stop from there is Portugal. Without thinking too much about it I booked the next flight to Lisbon, leaves at 1035AM (TapAir). It’s NOW I’m thinking about the time it will take to collect our baggage and switch airlines... will there be enough time? Will we need to go through immigration/customs? We’ll have 1 checked bag.

It sounds like these are two separate tickets, i.e. you first booked a flight to Dublin on Aer Lingus, and then separately another flight from Dublin to Lisbon on TAP Air Portugal. If that's the case, your checked bag won't be transferred to the second flight, meaning that you have to get it at the baggage claim and then pick it up yourself, meaning that yes, you will have to clear Irish passport control in Dublin (because you can only get to the baggage claim after going through passport control).

You will then have to go and re-check the bag (TAP Air Portugal enforces a 45-minute deadline before the flight to check bags in Dublin) and then clear security again to get to your gate. Ireland does not have exit passport checks so at least you won't have to do that.

If you somehow booked this on one ticket (i.e. USA-Dublin-Lisbon at once), then your checked bag should be transferred in Dublin and you should avoid having to re-check it, which will naturally be faster.

I have to say two hours sounds pretty tight to accomplish all of this, especially if you get stuck at the back of a slow-moving immigration queue, though I haven't flown through Dublin personally so can't say this for sure.

I believe that a number of flights originating from North America arrive in Dublin at about 8:30 AM. Assuming you are on separate tickets you will have to go through immigration and the non-EU immigration line is likely to be long. My personal experience with arriving at Dublin with multiple flights is an hour long wait at immigration. There are 2 terminals at Dublin. They are close but if you have to change that would probably be another 15 minutes. You may want to see about changing your TAP ticket to a later time. You could also check websites like flight aware to see on time rates for both the inbound and outbound flights, gate information and how many flights arrive in Dublin at 8:30 AM.
