Is it possible to take a ferry from Dublin to the west coast of Scotland? I'll be there in early September and also wonder if the weather would likely be a problem.
No it isn't.
Ferries from Dublin only go to Holyhead (Wales) and Liverpool (England).
From Rosslare they are also routes to South Wales, France and Spain.
For Scotland you have to go to Belfast (Stena Line to Cairnryan), Larne (north of Belfast) (P and O ferries, also to Cairnryan) or Ballycastle (Northern Ireland) for the little known Kintyre Express fast foot ferry to Campbeltown (Kintyre) and Port Ellen (Isle of Islay).
Although fairly unusual the two routes to Cairnryan can be disrupted in heavy weather, but the ones to Holyhead can sail in almost any weather. Usually disruption is due to it being too windy for docking and undocking to be conducted safely.
In some conditions when they do sail conditions can be lively.
Thank you. Excellent information!
