ferry insurance for rental car N Ireland to Scotland

coming from US to Dublin soon. Have rented a car through AutoEurope. They insist that I purchase AA single trip insurance just for the ferry portion of the trip, but AA will not sell to a non-UK resident. Any advice? I've been on the phone a lot to AutoEurope and many e-mails to AA. Have an inquiry out to the car rental company (Hertz) as well. Jane

This sounds like a very expensive rental. Why not rent a different car on arrival in Scotland? Dropping a car in another country adds cost-or were you bringing the car back to Northern Ireland after touring Scotland? More info will be helpful for others to assist you.

Yes, I plan to bring the same car back. If I cannot do this, then I would have to do two rentals.

This harks back to the firm dislike that hire companies have for roly poly boats on the briney blue full of cars and trucks that may clunk into each other or go for a swim.

They get nervous, some have a jar of alka seltzer or a pack of rolaids, some don't.

Just do two rentals. It really isn't that bad. We always do this when traveling to Orkney. You rent one car there then drop it off and then take the ferry to Thurso. Then bus to Inverness where we pick up another car. It's not difficult.
