Ferry from Wales to Ireland

Three of us are traveling on the Irish ferries from Fishguard to Rosslare. Is it worth upgrading to the club level with its reserved seats?

While I do like a bed on an overnight ferry, I've never upgraded on a daytime ferry - just sat wherever and sometimes moved around for dining or visiting the veranda. Try to board early for best selection. It's been years since I took that ferry route, so others will have more recent experience. How much was the upgrade fee?

The trip is less than four hours. There will be regular seats all over the place, you'll be walking around inside the boat and out, getting snacks and drinks, generally goofing off.

You wouldn't spent much time in the slightly plusher seat, anyway.

If you're planning on taking a car on the ferry, you've opened up a big can of worms.

Hello

I last travelled Rosslare to Pembroke about three years ago, but have already travelled Holyhead - Dun Laoghaire this year and am going again soon. I travel by car, and now use the premium tickets every time. BUT - your decision should really be based on whether you are driving or not, when you are travelling, and how tight your budget is. The crossing is only about 3 or 4 hours - if you are a foot passenger a premium seat is probably not worth the cost, as 'all' you are getting is a private lounge, slightly better seats and some free snacks. If you are driving though, you also get preferential embarkation and disembarkation which, if you have a car, can be worthwhile, especially during peak crossing periods. It's also worth noting that many crossing are very busy (if not full) from mid-July to early September, especially at weekends, so sometimes a premium seat may be available when the others are not - but at a cost. So to sum up - if a foot passenger and not on a crowded sailing then premium is probably not worth it. But if you are taking a car then premium is worth a look.
