Ferry from Scotland to Ireland

Four of us will be visiting Scotland and Ireland this summer. We are considering taking the ferry from Scotland to Northern Ireland, then rent a car to tour the Republic of Ireland and NI for 2 weeks. Is the ferry a good idea, and will it arrive somewhere with access to car rental? Any thoughts on a clockwise vs. counter clockwise itinerary ? Thank you!

We took the ferry from Belfast to Scotland. Turned in the rental car in Belfast and picked up another one in Scotland. It all went very smoothly. Bought the ferry tickets before we left home. That was our first ocean ferry ride. Everything went smoothly including the ride.

That went so well that we ferried from England to Dublin. Another no problems trip.

If it fits your travel plan take the ferry.

Be aware that the ferry terminal in Scotland (Cairnryan) is more than an hour south of Glasgow, not in the regions of Scotland that tend to be popular with tourists. If you are big Robert Burns fans or keen to see one of the Trump golf resorts, then the ferry wouldn't be that far out of your way. And, of course, on the Belfast end you are again out of your way unless you want to see Northern Ireland.

Otherwise, flying from either Glasgow or Edinburgh to Dublin or Shannon is a good alternative.
