Ferry from Ireland to Scotland

My wife and I want to fly to Dublin, Ireland August or Sept 2019 and spend several days in Ireland. We then want to take a ferry to Scotland and travel to Edinburgh. What would be the best way to go? Once in Scotland, are there trains that go to Edinburgh? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

If you really like ferry travel, or you have plenty of days, or you particularly want to see the region around Cairnryan, then the ferry is a satisfactory choice. Otherwise, it is inexpensive and easy to fly. Just be aware that the airline uses a far-flung tarmac so you will ride a shuttle bus from terminal to plane, and upon landing from plane to terminal. You may have to show your boarding pass to get on the shuttle bus and again to go up the stairs onto the plane.
