Family trip to Ireland- home base recommendations

Our family of four with two boys ages 8 and 15 be flying in and out of Dublin for 2 weeks in June. We enjoying site seeing, hiking and a taste of living like locals. We are interested in renting a house as our home base to explore an area of Ireland. Any recommendations for a home base or accommodations? We don’t want to spend a ton of time driving, but are open to train trips and up to 4 hours a day driving if needed. Thanks!

Many on this forum recommend the Connemara region, with Clifden a good town for a base. To avoid driving while jetlagged, you could take the train or bus from Dublin to Galway for your first night, then rent a car from there.

P.S. (edited) you mention train trips but not bus. Be aware that Ireland has a more robust network of bus routes than trains. If you want to be away from major cities without having your own rental car, bus will be your best bet.

Great recommendations! We will need to look into the bus routes also. No experience with driving on the opposite side. Although we both drive manual transmission! We’d like to try and avoid driving or at least long distances.
