We hope to do this on our trip, looking for recommendations for where? And is it worth the $ for both of us to do or just one?
Are you referring to a stroll with falcons while they hunt? If so, we did the Hawk Walk at Ashford Castle with the Ireland Falconry School (north of Galway), and it was lovely. I paid for my two teenagers to partake as their father and myself walked along. I don't know who the both of you would be, but it would be nice if you could both do it if interested. If you are a singleton, they may pair you with others.
We also did it at Ashford and it was a wonderful experience. Each of you should do it.
Thank you for the replies. I have a friend who did the Hawk walk at Ashford and also highly recommended. And hearing from you corroborates that. I am hopeful we have time while in that area. I see other Falcon experiences on line in other parts of Ireland and was interested in hearing feedback. The two of us is my hubby and I, in our late 60's.
We did the Kingdom Falconry experience in Dingle last September and enjoyed it very much. Good intro to some amazing creatures.
We have done both the one at Ashford Castle with our RS tour and the Dingle Falconry Experience at Milhouse with our grandkids. They’re both different. The Ashford grounds are beautiful to walk thru and staff has the falcon take flight and come back to his arm for a treat. If you want to learn about all types of raptors, see flight demonstrations and hold them on your arm, which was quite special for the kids then do Dingle.
I’m glad you asked this question! I’m looking into doing this for my daughter on her birthday (young adult). The one at Ashford Castle fits into our plans better than the one in Dingle. Will she get to have the bird land on her at all with that one? I know she’d be disappointed if it didn’t include that.
We did Killarney Falconry and it was really amazing!! Best experience of our trip. You get to actually launch a hawk - everyone has a turn. And we got to see some owls. It was awesome and we got some great photos and videos. Highly recommend!!
When we did the Ashford Castle hawk walk, my husband and I shared one hawk. We each got a falconry glove. We also did the extended experience, which included time with their cool Eagle Owl.
A posting on this Travel Forum a few months ago ( https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/ireland/update-ashford-castle-extended-hawk-walk ) indicated that the extended walk may no longer be available, but I’d check to make sure whether that’s changed.
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I hoped to learn. We have an afternoon free in Killarney but won’t be close to Ashford Castle unfortunately at all. I’m going to look into Dingle and the Killarney recommendation. Safe travels to all!
