Has anyone done the Genealogy Consultation at the EPIC Irish Immigration Museum in Dublin? What was the experience like? Was it worth the money? Thanks!
I visited the museum and thought it was worthwhile, especially the historical parts, but I don't know anything about the genealogy consultation.
I've spent a lot of email time with EPIC, PRONI, and Scottish Peeps and there's a huge vacuum in the records involving English citizens in the 16th century. Between loss of records to fires and records changing hands every time there's a war, and the fact that they didn't record movement of English between England, Scotland, Ireland, and the colonies, since they were just moving within the empire, I have given up on genealogy, stymied in about 1740.
If you're looking for more modern records, try the online resources first, then think about a consultant.
We went to EPIC and booked a consultation with a genealogist. He was excellent and extremely knowledgeable about Irish history and genealogy. He was able to trace my family and solved a mystery or two for us. He was able to quickly use his online resources to find information. It helps if you have some basic information like full names, birth dates, marriage dates and anything you already know.
We originally booked an hour but ended up extending to another session. Well worth the fees. Unfortunately, the genealogist we used is no longer working at EPIC, but I would hope the other genealogists on staff are equally qualified.
Actually, I cried when he shared some particular information about my ancestors and the session was a highlight of our trip to Ireland.
I plan to reserve another consultation the next time we are in Ireland. The museum was most interesting-allow several hours to go through it. There is a lot of information to process.
