Ennis recommendations

We enjoyed a one hour tour led by Jane O’Brien (she had dead ancestors all over Ennis) through Ennis Walking Tours. Not sure if there are other guides or if it's a one person operation. Also enjoyed the Clare Museum, Ennis Friary and Dysert O’Dea Castle (very chatty attendant). Enistymon made the Irish Times' list of 10 undervisited gems although we only drove through.

Our RS Heart of Ireland tour started there last month (Old Ground Hotel, lovely place), but there were no tour activities there -- not even an orientation walk. No doubt they chose Ennis for its proximity to Shannon airport and the Cliffs of Moher, not for Ennis itself. The tour only stayed there one night, but we came in a day early. All we really did was a stroll through their nice pedestrianized main drag and out to the friary (closed when we went by so we only saw it from outside the gate). So I can't help much with suggested activities, but I can recommend Brogan's for a great meal at a reasonable price. Our taxi driver from the airport suggested it. We ate lunch there, and the portions were American-sized (i.e., too much for one meal!) and tasty. It's in the middle of the pedestrian strip (O'Connell St).

I’ll second Brogan’s. Been to Ennis a few times (have ancestors buried at the friary). We never miss Brogans

Just a follow up as we just returned from Ennis. Great town! And loved the restaurant/cafe choices there. Brogans (as many of you had mentioned) was delicious BUT the portion sizes are enormous so plan accordingly. We really liked the Abbey as they had some twists on traditional Irish fare (goujons as a taco, which was very good.) The Poets Corner Bar was meh. For lunch we ate at Sweet n Greens, Mondo and one other place I cannot remember. But all very, very good.
For activities, we visited Bunratty Castle, the Burren for a bit of a nature walk (wildflower season is in July!), the Friary, and general exploration around town.
It is a really lovely town. I'm not sure why Rick doesn't give one day to the town itself. Anywho, thanks for all the advice!

I enjoyed Ennis so much, I named my puppy Ennis three years ago.
