I hope to go on the 7 day tour of Ireland-Ennis to Dublin.
I realize Dublin is larger and we have more time there, but are there destinations near Ennis I should consider?
Are you talking about the RS Heart of Ireland tour?
I would definitely give Dublin at least another day after the tour is over. And I would plan to arrive in Ennis a day before the tour starts.
In answer to your other question, you COULD fly round trip Dublin, take the bus immediately to Galway and spend a few days there, before catching a bus to Ennis for the start of your tour (all that if you don’t want to rent a car for any period of time).
We had a very bad experience with the Big Green bus /Dublin express to get from Dublin to Ennis to start the tour. Public transport is not great to get from Dublin to Ennis. We didn’t fly into Shannon because of cost but spent most of a day trying to get to Ennis.
The tour spends no time in Ennis except for the 1st dinner so I would suggest spending some time before the tour to see it. It is a lovely town. Transport to other areas from there is not easy without a car. Also suggest dinner reservations it is not a large town & in high season it is tough.
Enjoy the tour. It is very nice
