Eloping in Dublin September!

Rick Steves was there for me on my first trip to Spain to make sure my Midwestern tipping habit didn’t get the better of me with Spanish waiters. He was there for me on my first trip to Ireland to make sure I drove knew to always drive at geriatric speed around Irish bends due to the statistical probability of street sheep and/or cattle. He was there for my fiancée and I when he recommended avoiding Charles de Gaulle as a connecting airport unless we had “plenty of time between airports” (the ONLY piece of advice we irrationally disregarded, and regret to this very day! We’ll never not listen again, Rick!) Today I need Rick Steves (via Rick Steves community) for another major life event…

My fiancée and I are getting married at the Civil Registrar’s Office in Dublin (near Merrion Square) at the end of a lovely two week trip around the Southern Ring this Fall. We are incredibly excited, save for one minor detail…we have no witnesses! So we are crossing our fingers for some Irish luck that two people in the Rick Steves community (who we’ve always felt have been the most gracious, kind, intelligent, and all-around best looking group of travelers who definitely aren’t fools for shameless flattery), would want to serve as our witnesses!

In essence, we’re looking for two kind-hearted people who will be in Dublin on September 4, 2015 for our half hour (maximum) marriage appointment. As our witnesses, your list of duties include the following:

  1. Stand (or sit) as a physically present being. *Being mentally present is completely optional

  2. Sign your name on our marriage license.

That’s it! You’re all done, save that we would like to buy you standing/sitting/signing patrons a post-nuptial pint at a nearby pub to celebrate…and then, your service to your fellow Rick Steves community member is satisfied!

If this sounds like something you are interested in, or have a “laundry” day in Dublin, or if you’re a completely unimaginative person who can think of nothing else better to do in Dublin for 45 minutes to 1 hour on the afternoon of September 4th, 2015, please let us know! We’d love to fill the empty 45 minute to 1 hour void in your trip!

Happy travelling!

Sorry I will not be around, but after two weeks in Ireland you are bound to meet someone who happens to know someone in Dublin that will do that for you, 'cause that's how we do things in Ireland - everyone knows everyone! Just keep asking, we Irish will do anything for the craic ;-)

And the very best of luck for the future. I will be twenty-five years married myself in Sept - to a Swiss woman. The kids have great fun trying to adjust to the cultural difference between mom and dad.

Congratulations! What a wonderful plan!

I would have loved to do it but don't get to Dublin until September 22nd! If your dates change, let me know.

How excitingt! Jim is exactly right -- put your story out once you get there and you'll have plenty of new found friends!

Thank you all for the suggestions! I think you're right, we'll try to find some people on our travels or, if all else fails, bribe someone from the bar across the street! Having said that, do any of you have any suggestions for a lovely restaurant in Dublin we could dine at post-nuptials?
