Dublin via Liverpool/Cotwalds to London

We will be flying into Dublin and would then like to drive to London, which would allow us to drive through Liverpool and the Cotswalds. I've read its better to just rent a car in England. So, what is the best way to get to Liverpool from Dublin? (Fly/train)? We are limited time since we want to spend time in London before we head by train to Germany for a family wedding. We only plan to stay in Dublin a few days. Also, any suggestions on the drive through the Cotswalds? We are thinking of staying a night. And, we don't want to drive into London, so is there a place we could drop car off and take train into London? Sorry, lots of questions. Thanks so much.

fly from Dublin to Liverpool. Hire a car at the airport - do your drive down through the Cotswolds, return the car at Heathrow. Take the tube into central London.

I agree with the previous comment, having regretted the logic of "we're not catching a flight that day so why would we drop off our car at a major airport?" The fact is that public transportation into city centers (i.e., areas where travelers want to go) is very efficient from major airports, and the highway signage to get you to the rental car dropoff is also very good. Trying to drop off a car further into the city can be a navigational nightmare, let alone traffic jams.

Dublin-Liverpool, I agree flying is best unless you are a big fan of ferry boat/train travel and don't mind spending the extra time it would take out of your precious vacation days. Don't choose boat/train on the basis of money alone.

For the Cotswolds, read the RS guide and decide which town/village suits you. Note that Stratford-upon-Avon no longer qualifies as a quaint Cotswolds village (as it did decades ago when my parents took me there); today it's very built up and although they have tried hard to preserve the 16th-century core, it has its modern luxury car dealerships, big box stores and all the rest.
