Dublin to Killarney, County Kerry Places to stop along the drive

We will be driving from Dublin to Killarney in September any suggestions on place to stop along the route. Was thinking the Rock of Cashel but may be a long day. Any other places? Thanks

You are talking about 5 hours drive, which would allow a reasonable amount of time for a stop. Rock of Cashel is on the way and makes sense. The ruins are impressive and tehre is also the town to explore. At the bottom of the cliff and just a short distance away is the ruined Hore Abbey which would be a lot quieter if you wanted a picnic lunch.

Just did the drive - closer to 3.5 hours.

If you like whiskey you will pass through Tullamore. Lots to see/do in LImerick but I would stop in Adair - Desmond castle is far better than John's and Adair is a really cute town.

I agree that Adare is a beautiful town with interesting sights and a nice place to walk and spend time. It looks like it is on the direct route (Hope forum folks will correct me if I am wrong).

Rock of Cashel and Cashel town looks to be a slight detour - or an alternate route a bit to the south. Cashel is a great place to to spend time. Rock of Cashel is interesting ruins. (Already noted here)

Of course, there are a boatload of sights and historic places between Dublin and Killarney. Rather depends on how long your day will be.

One possible alternate route might be M7 out of Dublin, to the M8 and south through Cashel and Cahir continuing on M8 on to the N72 to Killarney.
The driving time, I suspect, would at least 5 to 6 hours, but it’s a guess. Some more knowledgeable Forum folks may respond.

Enjoy!!
