Dublin on a Layover (only 10 hours)

I am traveling to London with my 17 year old sister as her graduation present and we were able to arrange a flight that has a 10 hour layover in Dublin before we travel on to London. We arrive at 8:40am and our flight to London departs at 7pm. I've been to Dublin and Ireland before, but this is her first time being in Europe!

Any suggestions on what we should do with the day we have? What's the best way to get into the city to maximize our money and time?

Looking forward to all of your advice!

I can see the attraction, but I would encourage you to be realistic in leaving the airport and getting back in time. I'm not sure if there's bag storage at Dublin Airport - I think there's a thread about that currently. Be sure you're either ready to carry your baggage with you or are ready to store it and take with you what you want for a day out. Also keep in mind that any cash you deal with in Ireland will be euros versus the pounds you'll need in England.

The air porter bus is a quick 15-25 minutes into town depending on where you want to get off and buying a round trip ticket will allow you to get back on the bus and back to the airport on the same bus.
There a number of things to do with a few hours to spend in Dublin but I'm not sure what I would define it as a city. I'd check the regular lists of tourist stuff you'd be interested in doing and then cull based on the time you have. You could do a hop on hop off bus tour and get a feel for the city and see more sights quickly.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do,

Sir,

I suggest visiting the Dublin Writers Museum (http://www.writersmuseum.com/). It's one of my favorite museums in all of Europe and nicely encapsulates Ireland's great writing heritage.

From the Dublin Writer's Museum, take a stroll down O'Connell Street to Grafton Street. Look for the historically famous General Post Office, site of the 1916 uprising, on O'Connell and cross the Liffey River. On Grafton Street, stop in Bewley's Cafe (http://bewleys.com/bewleys-grafton-street-cafe) to get a taste of Victorian Ireland.

If time permits, see St. Stephen's Green, a beautiful public park.

Enjoy your visit to Ireland and England! Cheers.

Take a bus into the city and get dropped off near Trinity College. Explore the grounds of Trinity College (check out the Book of Kells if you're interested) then walk over to Dublin Castle to walk the grounds (skip the tour) and check out the nearby Chester Beatty Library (free!) Have lunch in a pub then explore/shop on Grafton Street. Hop a bus back to the airport.

*HoHo tours are highly recommended and probably worth it with the limited amount of time you have in the city. Do the full HoHo tour route once and then choose what you want to go back and see more in depth.

You've got a half hour in and a half hour back - - by bus which is the best way to do it. You'll be well clear of the airport an hour after the plane door opens. Being back two hours prior to departure is plenty. That's four hours, total. You've six hours to screw around.

Take her to what you enjoyed the most the last time you were there. Just from what's around you probably won't go much more than an half mile from the O'Connell Bridge, but you could easily fit in the thirty-minute bus up to the Kilmainham Gaol.

What's the drinking age in the RoI - - 18? Heck, take her down around Temple Bar, anyway, and buy her lunch at the first place that has live music.

If you start to run out of time somewhere in the far beyonds and see that the bus won't work, spring for a cab back to the airport.

I presume you're coming from the US (that'll arrive in T2 (Terminal2)) and you're going on to London by ? (AerLingus fly from T2 /all others fly out of T1) - leave your bags at the Left Luggage in T1 (it's actually in the atrium of the car park outside T1 - it's buried beside Wright's Food court shop, but despite it's looks it's a great baggage hold shop !) http://www.dublinairport.com/gns/at-the-airport/airport-maps/terminal1.aspx

If you get the Aircoach into O'Connell St http://www.aircoach.ie/ and return from O'Connell st that's the most reliable form of airport transport .I THINK they give a discount with the red Dublin Sightseeing tours bus as well http://www.dualway.com/sightseeing-tours-page49116.html

Hi,

That is a great amount of time to have in Dublin. I would suggest taking the Airlink (€10 return) bus into the city. I believe it is every 15 minutes from Terminal 1 & 2 in Dublin Airport and the same going back to the Airport. They also combine tickets with the Green Bus Tour which will save you money too.

If you're not looking for a tour, just get the Airlink to College Green - from there you have Trinity College (free to walk around - admission price for Library / Book of Kells), Grafton St, Nassau St, Chester Beatty Library (Free), Christ Church Cathedral (Admission price - €5/6?), St. Stephen's Green, Merrion Square & The Little Museum of Dublin (€7 or free if you're taking the green bus tour!) - all within a few minutes walk.

All the best and enjoy your day in Dublin.
Sean
