dublin - north of liffy

looking for hostels in Dublin + came across a RS forum recommendation for the Generator. i've read a few places on the forum not to stay north of the Liffy. is this a sketchy area or just not recommended based on distance from sites or transportation conveniences?
any insight on this particular questions is welcome or suggestions on hostels/hostel-priced places to stay in dublin in june. thanks!

Most of the sights are south of the Liffy. I think that's why it's recommended to stay there. The location looks fine to me, close to the Luas (Dublin's tram), close to the Liffy. Are you planning to stay in a dorm room? Are you traveling solo?

Greetings from Dublin!

The Generator as a hostel is a class apart in terms of quality and luxury. Its in a former 4 star hotel!

The Northside isn't 'sketchy', I would say it can be a little 'rough and ready' or you could also look at it as 'authentic'.

The are where the Generator is located is smithfield. It would take 10 minutes to walk to O'COnnell street and 15 or so to get over to the Temple Bar Area (southside). So that could be a negative for you, its not for me.

Rick Steves loves the Northside, he and I love going to 'The Celt' pub on Talbot street when he is in town, one of the best tradition pubs in all of Dublin.

Don't write off the Northside attractions though - Writers Museum, GPO, Dublin Zoo and Phoenix Park, Croke Park, Garden of remembrance etc etc

I once stayed in a guesthouse on Lower Gardiner St, right behind the Custom House. I was told that I would be sorry, it was a bad area, etc. On the contrary, though, it was a block full of hostels and guesthouses, and there were plenty of people around even late into the evening. It was maybe five minutes from O'Connell, and just across the bridge from the Temple Bar area - very walkable, even for a solo female.
