Dublin in early October: AirBnB recommendations/thoughts

Hi there. We'll probably be heading to Dublin following our wonderful trip which includes four nights in Vienna, the Rick Steve Southern France trip, and then Dublin for three nights or so before home.

I've been to Dublin three times, hubby twice, so this time I'm wondering if we shouldn't be looking at AirBnB or similar vs. hotels. Hotels have really gotten pricey this year!

Suggestions? I like the area around Mespil Road (I stayed at the Mespil Hotel during the Volcanic eruption a few years ago!) Enjoy that neighborhood feel where you still can walk to Trinity, etc. That would be my first choice, but open to other ideas. Last trip we stayed near the stadium, and I would have preferred to be a bit closer to central Dublin.

in 2013 we stayed at the Kilronan House BnB located on Adelaide Road
it was a 5 min walk to Grafton and St Stephen Green
nice place, friendly, good food and very close to downtown
while not a fancy hotel, which I did not want, I would stay there again

When planning our trip to Ireland for this summer, I contacted a bunch of airbnb properties hoping to get a place with a kitchen and enough space for a family of five. I was trying to avoid the cost of paying for two hotel rooms, plus being able to relax and cook in once in a while will help save on food costs too. Unfortunately, every single airbnb that I contacted in Dublin and Galway seemed very sketchy. I started looking and sending out queries five months in advance of our arrival, and even though the property's calendar was clear, once I enquired, I was told that the property was not available. It seemed to me that they would prefer to wait for last minute price gauging instead of renting for a lower price well in advance. So, just beware. (And I've had this airbnb problem in the US as well, for cities like NYC) I'm done with airbnb.

hmm. AirB&B may not be such a good idea! Thanks for the guest house info. If anyone else has recommendations for guest house/b&B's let me know.

While I understand citymom's point about potential price gouging, there are nonetheless several Air rentals in central Dublin for 2 guests with many good reviews. It seems to me that it could be the size/number of guests in citymom's search that had something to do with the response, with just two of you it may be worth looking at. I don't doubt what citymom says, but it may be a different dynamic for two.

Last time I needed an apartment in Dublin I used these guys: StayCity. We had an apartment at their Millennium Walk complex, just of O'Connell street. We were very happy with it, so I have no hesitation in recommending them.

I used Dublin City Apartments for our stay back in 2013. There was actually 15 of us total, and we were able to get 3 x 2-bedroom apartments on the same building on Parnell Square West, about a block west from Connelly Street and surrounded by Aldi, LIDL and another grocery store. It worked perfectly! I highly recommended as they have lots of properties all over the city and are a very reasonable price.

I posted an experience regarding AirBnB under the General Europe forum. You may want to check it out.
