Arriving on a Tuesday at 5.05 AM. How much time should we allow to safely get to Connolly and Hueston train stations, will not know which until we iron out our trip plan. Necessary to buy train tickets in advance? Thanks
My experience was pre-pandemic, and the bus systems have changed since then, but... I had a 5 am arrival into DUB, took a shower in the Aer Lingus biz-class arrival lounge, took the bus to Connolly, popped into the convenience store for snacks, and still waited a bit for the first train to Belfast.
Even if advance tickets aren't necessary, they're almost always prudent.
You might want to check whether there's express bus service to your destination directly from Dublin airport. Am pretty sure that there is to Belfast, Galway, Cork, and Waterford, and there may be others. Could save you a step and get you on your way a little quicker.
Edited to add: if it has to be the train then the easiest option would be to just catch a taxi from baggage claim to the station. Can't beat the convenience of the door to door service - especially if you're horsing luggage around, and for 2 of you it'll be a cost-effective option.
Unless you happen to hit a major holiday or something you probably wouldn't need to worry about buying train tickets in advance, though I'd double check that as your day draws closer.
Here is a link with options from the airport into Dublin. You may find it helpful to look this over and see the timings on the different routes. https://www.dublinairport.com/to-from-the-airport/by-bus/dublin-buses
The advice to check if there is a direct bus to your destination is good advice.
Thanks so much for all your responses. How much time should I plan for at the airport from gate arrival until I'm out the door toward the buses?
We've always found Dublin airport to be pretty efficient in getting us thru the various arrival procedures and out the door, but of course that was pre-Covid.
While I'm sure they still practice good Irish efficiency I probably wouldn't book anything too close to your arrival time - better to build in a little bit of a cushion so you're not worrying about making a connection, and if you have a little time on your hands waiting for a bus you can always just relax and grab a cup of coffee.
