We're planning a trip to Dublin in a few months. How safe is it? Seeing a lot of things online that the legacy media doesn't want to cover. What about rural areas to the south or west?
What things? Knife crime? Drugs? Phone snatchings? Immigrant gangs? What, specifically, are you worried about?
And why do you think the “legacy media” (by which I assume you mean outlets like ABC and/or the NY Times) isn’t covering this crime?
Dublin is safer than most American cities. I’ve been there many times and have never seen a crime committed. I can’t say the same about the U.S.
Strangely enough in our decades of life and travel Dublin is the only place where my partner or I was ever pick pocketed. It was his fault as I kept reminding him not to let his day pack swing around to his back. Mine somehow always manages to stay in front. Anyway... we were milling about Leo Burdock's in Christchurch munching while loitering. That made negligence easy. We did remember 3 young men buzzing around us at one point. The pickpocket managed to unzip the day pack and took a small change purse and that's all he got - a few coins for toilets! It was a really useful flexible silicone change purse for which we haven't found a decent replacement. Michael was more mad about losing that than the few coins. Even tall strong in shape mature men are subject to pick pockets. Other than this isolated event we felt as safe in Dublin as any other location.
Just a few months before that I believe an American tourist was beaten to death in a more sketchy Dublin incident which was covered heavily in the media.
Our days among the wonderful people in the Wicklows were completely safe.
I agree it's much more dangerous here in the US and my worst incident was not in my metro Detroit haunts.
Seeing a lot of things online that the legacy media doesn't want to cover.
How you got any evidence to support this assertion?
At the risk of repeating what others have said, in response to this query as well as numerous other similar queries, I can say without hesitation, I have always felt safe when wandering around Dublin. And allow me to add, I have lost track of how many times I have been to Dublin. Almost a yearly trip - family and friends there. Sure, there are areas in Dublin, as in any city anywhere, where one might tread with caution. But those usually aren’t where tourists would be venturing. Frankly, I feel less safe, more anxious in my own town here in upstate NY. Relax, use common sense and all will be fine.
By the way, Dublin is awesome! And the people, wonderful.
First, I'm genuinely curious what you mean by "legacy media" as this is a term I've never heard? Second, I'm not sure where online you are getting your information but Dublin is as safe as any big city and, in fact, safer than many big cities in the US. Doing a quick google search I find that the top search results explain how safe it is in Dublin and Ireland (very.) Outside of Dublin is beautiful and the people are incredibly friendly. Hopefully you are able to plan your vacation without hesitation and enjoy this beautiful country and culture.
I, a middle aged white lady, just spent a solo long weekend in Dublin. While the city of Dublin was not my jam, I never felt unsafe at all. I took the DART to Howth and to Dalkey and then hiked from Dalkey to Killiney. The coast is beautiful, the DART cheap and easy to ride, everyone very friendly.
Now, if you're eating something outdoors where there are a lot of seagulls, like, say, the lake at St. Stephens Green, you definitely need to be on your guard.
