My daughter and I are planning on taking a train to Belfast from Dublin for a day. Also looking into flying from Belfast to Liverpool for the day. Any suggestions?
If you are interested in the history of "The Troubles" (Nationalists vs. Loyalists, Catholics vs. Protestants, etc.), my understanding is that several companies offer "Black Taxi" tours of the areas where The Troubles occurred and where neighborhoods are still segregated between those who want a completely united Ireland and those who want Northern Ireland to continue being a part of the U.K.
I assume that your taxi driver would take you into the Falls Road (Irish Nationalists) and the Shankills Road (British Loyalists) areas, where you can see many large painted murals about The Troubles on numerous buildings and walls.
If you're interested in doing this, I'd do a Google search for Belfast Black Taxis, and check out TripAdvisor for reviews of the various companies offering this service.
There are many drivers offering these tours. We arranged to be picked up at the train station, and had about a ninety minute tour, which was incredible, then got dropped off at Belfast City Hall, where they host free tours-recommended. I would say that a somewhat longer Black Taxi tour would have been okay with us, with even more details and more locations. You can work out the length of the tour ahead of time. We arranged with Norman-see RS show link below-and his partner John showed up, it was very worthwhile, and quite moving.
