We stayed a night in Cobh--I highly recommend it....It's a 3 hour drive from Dublin, and the Rock of Cashel is right along the way.

Not sure how far out of Dublin you are considering but for our July trip this year, we are considering Howth or Killiney/Dun Laoghaire... they are both within 30 minutes or so of Dublin by train
