Dublin at Christmas

Hello,
My husband and I will be in Dublin Dec. 22-30 and we are trying to decide if we want to stay in Dublin the entire time and do day trips, or whether we want to stay someplace else as well (Galway? Kilkenny?). We won't have a car so plan to rely on trains. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!!!

Sincerely,
jobi

I would stay the 23-26 of December at Ashford Castle for a Christmas you will never forget! Trust me this place is amazing.

I would recommend staying in Dublin and using it as a base camp. It's a good idea to be in the city during the winter. About 15 years ago, I was in Dublin in November. There was a lot going on in the city as the holidays approached, but little of the tourist hordes. Two activities stick out in my memory. The Gate Theater was performing a Christmas Carol, a play I've seen at least a dozen times. I decided to go anyway. It was the single best production I've ever seen out of at least 250 plays lifelong. Also, I went to an Evensong service at Christchurch Cathedral, though I'm not Anglican. It was very moving. Whatever you decide, have a great time in beautiful Ireland. Cheers.

Thank you for the suggestions! I'm trying to decide between a day trip to Newgrange/Hill of Tara with Mary Gibbons tour, or a day trip to Glendalough with Wild Wicklow Tours. Does anyone recommend one place over the other?? Thanks!

Glendalough is gorgeous. Newgrange absolutely fascinating. All depends on your interests.

We were in Dublin two years ago over Christmas. It rained, sleeted, snowed and sun shined on us all in one day. Buy a good umbrella when you arrive. Wear a hat, boots and clothing layers. Pubs will be warm, so you will want to be able to take some layers off. Shopping is great. Lots of sales. If in a hotel room, ask, when you arrive, which pub or restaurant will be open Christmas day and do you need reservations. There is a great buffet breakfast and lunch place, the Kylemore, at the Spire. It is beside the James Joyce Statue.
