Dublin and Southern Ireland advice needed?

Going on a Baltic cruise next summer and want to add about a week, Dublin and renting a car driving down to Cork with stops along the way. My question what should come first? Should we land at Dublin, rent a car explore for several days, then return the car to Dublin airport, then explore the city of Dublin before our flight back to US? Or reverse? I know that I do not want to drive in Dublin. Not sure of the best way to get from the airport downtown?

Sig, you can taxi or bus from the airport into Dublin, a short ride, and there is very good public transport there so you are correct, a car is not wanted in Dublin. If this is at the end of your cruise and you are therefore not jet-lagged, no reason not to do it first and head south, unless you are ready for a break then staying put a day or two makes sense. I will say that with one week you may want to get down to the Dingle area for the spectacular scenery and towns there. Also, if your flight is not yet booked you may consider coming into Dublin and flying out of Shannon, or vice-versa.

If you returned the car to the airport a couple days before departure, it is, once again, an easy ride into the city, and would be simpler than returning in Dublin.

Thank you Dave. This trip is at the end of the cruise. I would fly to Ireland from Amsterdam, so I could fly into Shannon and drive southern route to Dublin or vice versa, would have to check best airline fares back to the states.

Flying into Shannon makes the most sense. It is easier to adjust to the "other side of the road" driving there because Shannon airport is small and out in the country instead of on a busy street, as is the case in Dublin. You could still turn the car in at the Dublin airport, then take the bus to the city center.
