Is this realistic, or just a hassle? My husband arrive in Dublin from Chicago in the early hours. I'd like to train to Kilkenny, spend the night and recover from jet lag, then pick up a car the next morning to begin our trip. I realize that I could get the car at the Dublin airport...but I have second thoughts about car rental plus driving on the left when jet lagged. Have spent several frustrating hours finding my way after renting cars in European cities in the past, would prefer to take all this on when my mind is sharp and I've had a chance to acclimate myself. However, it does look like we'll need to either taxi to the train station or else just take the bus from the airport all the way to Kilkenny. Any advice is VERY welcome!
If you're really that averse to picking up a rental car upon arrival why not just find a place in Dublin to remain overnight? While it's true that you wouldn't be able to check in until mid afternoon, your hotel would probably be happy to store your bags for the day while you're out and about. Then, after a good night's sleep and a day to acclimate yourself, you could pick up your rental from somewhere near the outskirts of the city and be on your way.
Starting the rental from a city location versus from the airport can sometimes save some money too, which might help to offset the cost of your Dublin hotel.
Thanks for weighing in, these are some good points. Still not sure which way to go...
