Dublin Airport passport control to Schengen Area

Hi! I'm planning my first trip to Europe (US citizen) and will be visiting a few countries in the Schengen area (Germany and Austria). I'm planning to fly from the US to Dublin and then take a connecting flight from Dublin to Frankfurt, Germany.

I wanted to ask if travelers transiting through Dublin have to go through passport control at the Dublin airport if they are headed to a Schengen area destination, or if that will happen once I arrive in Germany? I understand Ireland is NOT part of the Schengen area but just wanted to double-check about the passport control situation since I couldn't find any answers on other posts here.

Thank you for your help! The flight I'm considering has a 2 hour layover in Dublin, is that enough time to make a connecting flight?

Since you are only connecting with another flight at Dublin’s airport and you are not leaving DUB airport, you technically will be considered to not be entering Ireland. This is called remaining “airside.” Therefore, you will not go through customs or immigration in Ireland ( so no passport stamping and no customs line). That will happen for the first time after you land in Frankfurt, Germany and enter the Schengen zone. It’s in Frankfurt that you’ll start your 90-day time period for traveling in the Schengen zone.

Two hours is plenty of time to connect in Dublin.with your flight to Germany. Frankfurt is among the largest airports in Europe and the passport control lines can take a while to get through.

Have a great trip!
