We are traveling with friends who will be flying home from Heathrow, changing planes in Dublin and Chicago before flying to Sacramento. I’m assuming they will go through U.S. passport control in Dublin. If so, is there a different location for them go through than the people who are flying directly from Dublin? They have 1.5 hours to change planes there. Does Global Entry work in Dublin?
They will go through passport control in Chicago, since that is the first point of entry in the US. They will just show their passport when they check in at Heathrow, and again at the gate in Dublin.
Travel4fun -- are you sure ? I have understood for years that people flying from Dublin to the U.S. do their passport control in Dublin as if they were already in the States. When they arrive in the States, they are already processed and just walk off the plane.
Yes, Dublin is like Canada in that you go through US immigration there rather than US. And, yes, I use Global Entry.
Forgot to say it is called preclearance and is in terminal 2.
US immigration will happen in Dublin, and there will be a Global Entry line. They will arrive in the US at a domestic gate.
For those who may be curious as to what pre clearance is at Dublin Airport, here is the link from the airport
Thanks for the confirmation everyone, just as I thought. I will relay the information to my friends.
As others have said, they will pre-clear US immigration in Dublin. Since they are only changing planes, they will not need to go through Irish security, only US TSA and passport control.
You are downstairs when you go through passport control. The eating and drinking options are very limited and when I went through nothing was stocked.
