Drop off / Pick up laundry

Reading through the RS book on Ireland it seems that there are no self -serve laundry facilities....or at least none I have run across.

Other than using a dry cleaner here in the States I have never had a hotel, etc. do my laundry.....so how does it work? RS says that it is X amount of dollars up to X amount of pounds. Okay, I understand that but do they just weigh your clothes and then wash everything together?? If I sort my laundry into 3 piles do I pay for the combined weight or do I pay per pile?? We basically take what we call "travel clothes." Shirts and pants from Columbia (or someone similar) that are lighter weight and dry quickly. At home I will still wash the shirts and pants separately, use no fabric softener and usually just dry them for a few minutes in the dryer and then hang them up to finish drying. I have visions of dropping my clothes off, everything being washed in one load and dried to death.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I don't mind washing things out in the sink (or if we happen to have a bathtub...even better). I have not tried the 2 gallon zip lock bags but I can't imagine pants would wash to well in them???????????????

We have similar clothing and they come out fine. That has been our experience so far. It is just a pile and I assume it gets wash together. Generally we ask at the hotel for the nearest self-wash and we go there. Often they will have an attendant who will do it for for a couple euro more. We don't ask a lot of question. Just when to come back and get it. We hand wash underwear, shirts, and socks. Pants can often go a week or more without being washing. About once a week/ten days we make a point of having everything except on our back done. Nothing has ever come back melted or too small.

I typically throw everything together in this case, but if you ask them to wash loads separately then they will charge separately.

In most places in Europe, the drying is not an issue other than many times my clothes came back still slightly damp and needed a day strewn about the hotel room to finish drying.

Yes, if you split your clothes into multiple piles you will be charged a minimum for each pile. And there is no guarantee your items will not end up all washed together anyway, or even that they won't be combined with another person's items to make a full load in the commercial washers used. Luckily so far all of my whites have not come back pink due to someone having a red item in their load. :-)

I have never done laundry in sink except for a couple light weight shirts when I was running low on clothes and it was too long to the scheduled laundry stop. It didn't like how they came out so didn't try that again.

Thank you all for your response. We will be gone 25 days so I am guessing we will either need to do laundry or hand wash a few things at least. It probably will be on the cool side so shirts can be worn more than once (I am hoping for 3 X) and I did wear a pair of pants in Italy for 9 days once :) That may sound gross to some but every day I would look at them to see if there was any visible dirt, think of what I was doing that day (hiking in Vernazza? no need for a clean pair), etc.
