Hello, We are planning to drive from Kilkenny to Ring of Kerry.
How many nights do we need? If we start on the Ring, wouldn't we have to stop somewhere in between for a night? Or do we need two nights?
I don't know how to plan and organize this driving trip. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks so much.
It might be worthwhile to obtain a guidebook to help you plan your trip, such as the one from Rick Steves:
https://store.ricksteves.com/shop/p/ireland-guidebook
The Kindle version is available on Amazon. You may also be able to check out guidebooks covering Ireland from your public library.
It will take just over three hours to drive from Kilkenny to Kilarney plus time for stops. Driving the Ring of Kerry can take from half a day to a full day depending on how many stops you make and if you also include Cliffs of Kerry too (well worth doing and as good if not better than the better known ones at Moher!) and Valentia Island. There are also ring forts to find -Staigue, Cahergal and Leacanabuaile. Do try and include one, although they are each very different.
You could either stop in Killarney for the night - spend time when you arrive seeing something of the National Park - Ross Castle, Torc waterfall, Gap of Dunloe, Mucross House and the traditional farms.... and then do Ring of Kerry the next day. Depending on what you are doing next, you may need another night in Killarney.
Alternatively do part of the Ring and book accommodation in say Cahersiveen, about half way round for the first night. Then finish the ring the next day. Accommodation for that night would depend on what you are doing next as you might not want to go back to Cahersiveen.
If you haven't already bought a guide book, then that would help. My favourite in DK Eyewitness Ireland which has lots of pictures and information. It also nincludes many places not in the oither guide books. The maps are sufficiently detailed to help with initial planning too. Buy a cheap copy second hand off Amazon. It doesn't matter if it isn't the latest edition as long as you check opening times etc on the web. the actual information won't change much.
