I am from the United States. Do I need to bring an International Drivers License or permit while driving a car rental in Ireland?
you will not need an international drivers license, your standard state issued drivers license is sufficient
Whatever you do, get ALL the insurance on the car! You will almost certainly hit a curb or scrape a wall! But it's so fun driving on the tiny roads in the countryside!
Deborah,
I agree with the previous reply to get complete CDW coverage, especially since you'll be driving on the "correct" side of the road. Note that with credit card insurance coverage for rental vehicles, not all cards may provide that coverage in Ireland.
I'm not sure if you need one. Its main purpose is to translate your "home" license to another language, which isn't an issue in Ireland. But I don't know what Irish authorities require or if they make an exception for non-EU countries that speak English. I was never asked for one when renting the car, but also was not asked at the rental counter in a few non-English speaking countries as well. I'd suggest safe is better and get one just in case, it's pretty easy to get one.
I'll also add another recommendation on the insurance, even though you didn't ask for opinions on it. A scrape along a hedge or wall is almost certain. And get the smallest car you can tolerate, you'll be glad you did. If you decide to take your chances on a higher deductible, Tom's of Maine toothpaste makes a good emergency substitute for automotive rubbing compound.
I love the internet! Deborah asked a simple question, and while she did get a few (possibly conflicting) answers to her question she got a bunch more to ones she didn't ask (including mine). I guess it's like some old British guy said about not getting what you want but getting what you need.
Yes the backroads are tiny so go slow and be on the look out for people walking their dogs, bicyclists, sheep, lorries, etc. Then again being in Eire is ALL about slowing down and enjoying the beauty that surrounds you. YES, get all the coverage possible and before you leave the rental place take cell phone or digital photos on your camera of the car. Take photos when you return the car as well. That way you'll have visual proof if the scratch or dent was there when you rented the car or if you were responsible. I've now driven the island twice without any scratches or damage. It can be done, just have to be vigilant. Stunningly beautiful country to enjoy. Have a great trip.
No, you do not need an international drivers license. I agree with the other posts on getting the CDW. Also, inspect the car carefully (including the spare tire and jack) and document all dings and scratches before you leave the lot. We got an optional GPS which was a lifesaver on some of the more remote back roads. Happy travels!
