Driver Guides in Ireland

I am going to be a first-timer this may with my wife and 18 year old daughter.
I was OK driving around Italy but am concerned about driving a stick shift on the left side of the road with steering wheel and pedals reversed and am considering hiring a guide to drive us around.
Any advice on first-time driving experiences, stick vs automatic, etc. and potential guides would be appreciated.

Just hire an automatic. The rental companies all have fleets of automatic cars to cater for our American visitors.

Indeed, as Marcus says, it should be easy to rent a car with an automatic. There are drivers in Ireland who often double as tour guides, but I have not heard anyone mention a driver that you would stay with long term, it's more a thing of finding a driver for each region you are in, and the problem there becomes that public transport in Ireland is not great.

I'm 58, and driving with the stick shift and pedals on the opposite side didn't create any problems for me, but I've driven one in the U.S. since 1983. There are plenty of automatics to rent if you're concerned, though. They're usually a little more expensive.

so you'll feel a bit better know the pedals are not reversed, accelerator is on the right pedal, brake is in the middle, clutch is still on the left..i still prefer to pay more and drive the automatic. I do the driving but I also am there to see the scenery so I want to feel comfortable to look around a bit! I have driven in Italy and Scotland and found Scotland much more difficult at least the first few days. Roads were more narrow, left side diving, and often curbs and stone fences bordering the roadway. We did some driving on single lane roads in the highlands and had to back up to passing spots several times on pretty steep inclines (out on Skye mainly) and this would have been a challenge for me with a clutch! Get the smallest car that can handle your group!

There are a lot of tour companies who provide a car and driver guide

They will spend 7 to 10 days with the group and tailor route / itinerary to suit your requirements

I can give you some contacts if you wish to email me directly

We were there in September for the first time and my husband did great. It was a bit tricky the first day especially in towns when you are driving close to other cars but after that it was fine. I would recommend starting out on a highway/bigger road. We thought of it as an adventure :)
