Drive from Galway to Portrush

To break up this drive does anyone recommend either Sligo or Donegal town for an overnight? Any specific hotel/B&B preferences?

On our trip this past September, we took 2 weeks to work our way from Galway up to the Antrim Coast. During that time, we stayed 2 nights just a little outside Sligo town, at the Serenity B&B. Reaching it involved driving along some country lanes with tall crops on either side, but they served a great breakfast, it was very comfortable, and the price was good. It was a bit remote though, and while staying there we drove into the nearby small town of Drumcliff for dinner, which was delicious. Overall, it was a more rural, not urban experience.

Either would be a nice spot to overnight, with a nod toward Sligo Town because of its lovely riverwalk along the Garavogue River for al fresco dining and people watching. It's been too long to recommend any B&Bs.

How much time do you want to spend? I was on a limited (girlfriend's) schedule so went through the area faster than I would have otherwise liked. Sligo is probably a good choice, Donegal next. I didn't stay in either, I stayed in Derry and Roundstone (and Inismor). It also depends what you want to see?

Good choices include: Ashford Castle (hawk walk) and Cong/Cong Abbey, Kylemore Abbey, Biking in Westport, Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, Beltany Stone Circle, Newmills Corn and Flax Mill, Sligo Abbey, Grianon of Aileach, Walls of Derry.

Careful with Portrush. It's the site of this year's British Open. If you're going around that time, you should plan to stay a little further one way or the other.

Thank you, thank you, thank you all!

We're making a "bee-line" from Connemara to Portrush so it's just a one night stop on the way. Sligo sounds like the winner!

Also, fantastic heads-up about the Open taking place in Portrush. I didn't realize that but at least we'll be a couple weeks out from that event.
