My husband and I (mid sixties) are visiting Ireland for the first time next month. We're spending most of our time in the west. We plan to drive from Cork to outside of Dublin. Any suggestions for stopping along the way? We're going to spend our last three nights in Dublin suburb. Flying into Shannon out of Dublin.
The most obvious stop is the Rock of Cashel and its close neighbor Hoare Abbey. Slightly off the main Cork-Dublin route is Kilkenny.
If you won’t already have done so, stop and visit the Blarney Castle and its fantastic garden grounds, just north of Cork, en route towards Dublin. The castle is famous for many because of its legend of kissing a stone at the top, and there are tourists who still do that. You don’t have do that part, by any means, but climb within the castle to the overlook at the top, plus a wander through at least part of the variety of gardens on the grounds will let you see the substantial renains of an authentic Irish castle, plus incredible foliage. We had three hours there last spring, and it was a surprisingly satisfying time.
