Later this month we will drive from Doolin to Dingle. Does anyone have a favorite stop along the way to break up the drive? We have a two year old who will need to stretch his legs from time to time. Also, I am torn on whether to take the Killimer-Tarbert ferry route or drive through Limerick. It sounds like driving through Limerick is faster. Thank you!
I would make a pit stop at Bunratty folk park. We did that last year on our way from Dingle to Galway and my kids loved it.
I have no recommendations on where to stop--simply because we didn't. We did this drive in early May, took the ferry, and arrived in Dingle just after midday. Since you have a two year old, the ferry may prove to be a good idea. Unless you arrive just in time to board, you can get out and walk around a bit while waiting for the ferry. There's a small gift shop, restrooms, etc. The ferry itself proved to be a nice diversion of its own. Once aboard, you can get out and walk around a bit, and there's a nice solid wifi signal--at least there was on ours.
The shortest route will be via Limerick, but we also prefer the slightly longer meander via Kilrush and Kilkee connecting to the Tarbert ferry (on a sunny day). Some very pretty seascapes along the way, and numerous little places to stop and stretch your legs...especially along the beachside promenade at Kilkee.
We've done both and I agree with previous posters--the Limerick route is faster but it is much more fun to take the ferry. I would think that your two year old would enjoy it, and the scenery along the way is lovely.
