Donegal to Dublin - Route?

We need to drive from Donegal to Dublin on a trip coming up at the end of the month.

Looks like we have two reasonable roots -- either taking the N2 through Monaghan and Ardee or the N3 through Kells.

Any recommendations as to routes? Any cute places to stop for lunch along the way? Anything we shouldn't miss?

(we are planning all day for the drive but won't have tons of time to get up into N. Ireland, or Sperrin, etc, and yes we have our UK ETA visas since we'll go through N Ireland-- we may detour for a playground since our 5yo will be with us)

Thanks to all of you for your insights!

You don't have to go through Northern Ireland .... You could take the N15 through Bundoran and Sligo and then pick up the M4 through Carrick on Shannon, Longford, Mullingar to Dublin. Its only a few km longer than the M3 route.

Longford is about half way. You could consider a short diversion north to the Knights & Conquests Heritage Centrein Granard which is a kid's friendly hands on and interactive experience that gets good reviews on Trip Advisor

If you want a walk then there is Derrycassin Wood on the shores of Lough Gowna which has seeral short waymarked trails.

Just a few minutes from Mullinger is Belvedere House and Gardens. This has different kid;s play areas as well as a Fairy garden and woodland walks.
