Donegal or Sligo??

Hello fellow travelers! I apologize for this lengthy submission. But here it goes....We will be arriving in Ireland March 6, departing March 19. We are flying in and out of Dublin. Here is our tentative itinerary; 2 nights in Dublin (considering making this one night since we will be returning for a night at the end of our trip), collect our rental car and drive to Belfast for 2 nights, leave in the morning and head to Portrush, stopping at Carrickfergus castle, possibly the Gobbins (weather permitting) and if we have time, stop to see the Dark Hedges. Spend 2 nights in Portrush visiting the Dunluce castle, Giants Causeway, Bushmills and Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. From here I am unsure where to go next... Derry/Londonderry is a definite stop but not likely(?) an overnight visit. We would like to end up in Galway for St. Paddy’s day, staying at least 2 nights there, so that would leave us 3/4 days to get from Portrush to Galway. I am considering a night or two in either Donegal or Sligo (pros/cons? Suggestions?) then a night or two possibly in Westport(?). My husbands descendants are from Co. Mayo, around Knock, so we want to do some day trips exploring that area. Then off to Galway. Then we will return to Dublin the day before our departing flight. So basically it is 1/2 nights in Dublin, 2 nights in Belfast, 2 nights in Portrush, then 3/4 nights somewhere??, 2/3 nights in Galway, and 1 night in Dublin. So my questions are: donegal or Sligo? 1 night or 2? Thoughts on Westport? And is 1 night in Dublin at the beginning and 1 night at the end enough?? Also is 2 nights enough for Belfast? I welcome any suggestions or ideas, we have nothing carved in stone and would appreciate any advise! Also, any advise on making the most of St. Patrick’s Day in Galway would be welcome!! Thank you all in advance!
Kerri
