do ireland bus tickets need to bought in advance?

Hi,
I'm not talking about long distance buses (like dublin to galway) but let's say (what i think are) local buses that go from, as one example, galway to connemara (bus 423 or 923) or that go around ring of kerry (bus 270 and 281). I think the tickets are sold on buseireann and citylink.ie depending on the bus. So do i need to buy these in advance? Or is it something you can just buy on the bus?
Thanks in advance for any help.

On local link services such as the 281 you can't buy in advance. On Bus Eireann such as the 423 and the 270 most locals wouldn't buy in advance because they would be using Leap stored value cards (available to everyone). Those give 30% off the cash fares, but that 30% off can't be obtained by booking in advance. So every incentive not to book ahead.

On Citylink 923 you may as well book ahead if you want as Leap doesn't work on Citylink.
