Dinner reservations

We will be spending a month in Ireland & N. Ireland (8/24-9/24) and wondered if we should be making dinner reservations. The only urban locale we will be in is 4 nights in Dublin at the start of our visit. Our other bases are Kilkenny, Kinsale, Kenmare, Doolin, Clifden, Killybegs, and Ballycastle.

We don't need fancy food or ambiance. Most often we prefer to eat at local places recommended by our innkeepers, those popular with local residents, or places we stumble on when we're out and about. That said, we also don't want to find ourselves without a place to eat after a long day of exploring!

Advice would be much appreciated.

In Killybegs, Anderson's Seafood Restaurant seems to fill up, but they have an excellent chippie. In 2024, it was across the street and down a little lane.

We just returned from a 3-week trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland. We made about 5 dinner reservations before we left home. One was in Dublin at The Pig's Ear, where we met friends for dinner.

We did not make dinner reservations in Kenmare. There, we dined at the Coachman's Restaurant. It was quite busy, though, and the hostess asked us if we had reservations. She was able to find us a table. So perhaps reservations there might be a good idea. We also dined at Lily's in Kenmare, an Asian restaurant. When we first arrived, they were full. So we made reservations for about 1.5 hours later.

In Clifden, we had one of the best meals of our trip at Mitchell's. It was outstanding! We made reservations there when we arrived in Clifden. I would make reservations at Mitchell's if you are interested in dining there. At least several days in advance, or more.

In Doolin, we dined at O'Connor's Pub. No reservations. But it was very busy.

Thank you both. It's good to know what towns are recommended for reservations. I had heard of the great fish dinners in Killybegs, but I had not heard of Mitchell's in Clifden.

We stayed at the Coachman, and the night before we got there the musician injured his hand so there was no music:(, We ended up dining a few door down the block for dinner and then Foley's across the street more music.

There were several restaurants in Dublin that we tried to get into, but they were full. Reservations is a good idea.

If you know when you're going to be there, get reservations. If you're out in the boondocks with an unkown arrival, prepare for fish & chips.

Any favorite restaurants in Dublin? We're staying near Trinity College, but we can use public transportation to get elsewhere.

We really enjoyed our meals at The Pig's Ear. Reservations are a must. And we also really liked our meals at The Hairy Lemon. We didn't have reservations, but we did have to wait about 15 minutes for a table.
