Dingle vs. Killarney

Hi all! We are spending 2 weeks in Scotland and Ireland at the end of July. We had planned to stay 2 nights in Dingle, as Rick Steves mentioned in his book that it was a good place for traditional music in pubs etc. However, my travel agent friend said that Dingle was a "sleepy town with not much to do" and we would be better off staying in Killarney if we wanted pubs and music. He admitted he hadn't been there in at least 6 years, so things might have changed. Does anybody have any recent experience with the music scene in Dingle, especially during the week (we will be there on Tuesday and Wednesday). Thank you in advance!

I was in Dingle two summers ago, and Killarney last summer. I won't go back to Killarney, I will make a point to get back to Dingle. I'd go with RS's description over your travel agents. Killarney is very crowded, there's a souvenir shop every few doors, and caters to tourists. The pubs/music in Dingle seem more traditional and authentic. I also doubt it was much different when your travel agent was there 6 years ago, so maybe it's a matter of personal taste and preference. I was in Dingle on a Wednesday. It was clearly a little slower than it might be on a weekend, but there was certainly more than a few pubs with music.

Agreed, Dingle hands down. We were there mid-week, and it was quieter than a weekend, but there were several pubs with live music. Frankly, Dingle is one of my very favorite places I've ever been to. I would not call it "sleepy," but it is small. That doesn't mean there isn't plenty to do, and the Slea Head Drive is incredible. I thought Dingle was the best music scene we experienced in Ireland.

We stayed 2 nights in Doolin, 2 nights in Dingle, and 2 nights in Kenmare, and 1 night in Killarney. My favorite music was in Doolin, actually, but that is a VERY small town. It all depends on what your interests are. I personally wouldn't go back to Dingle, as I felt it was too touristy, but I do believe that a lot of travelers really enjoy Dingle. We did hear good music there, but I felt like Doolin was more authentic.

I vote Dingle over Killarney any day of the week. We did enjoy good music in Killarney one night at Murphy's pub, but otherwise did not care for it. Too many tour buses, too many low end shops catering to the buses.

Foxy John's for pint at least once. Easy drive to Killarney but I'd go ONLY to explore the gorgeous beauty of Killarney National Park. I'd also explore the Gap of Dunloe which you'll find between Killarney and Dingle. It's uniquely lovely and worth exploration. Slainte!
