Dingle drive

I have but one day to drive the Dingle Peninsula and visit the town of Dingle. Realistically, what amount of time should I alot for the drive around and in the peninsula? I'm going to the Cliffs of Moher the following day and it looks like it's about 3 hours from the town of Dingle. I'm thinking about staying closer to Tralee to shorten my day as I will be traveling to Dublin after I visit the Cliffs of Moher.

Just beyond the city of Dingle along a windy road is the Slea Head Peninsula and the view of the Atlantic and Great Blasket Island is just STUNNING. We've been there several times and never tire of the beauty. Look for the Slea Head Cafe for a brownie and a coffee while sitting outside on the deck.

Buon viaggio,

To answer your question: The drive from Kinsale to Dingle Town will take you around 3 to 3.5 hours if you go the most direct route via the N22, which takes you thru the roundabouts in Killarney which are guaranteed to slow you down.

Slea Head Drive itself is only about 35 to 40 miles in length depending on whether you include Gallarus Oratory and Kilmalkedar Church, so the drive itself could take a little more than an hour, though with stops along the way (at Dunquin for example) it usually takes about 4 hours to complete. Most people allot half a day I think.

Once you add in the hour to then drive to Tralee you'll be looking at a pretty long day behind the wheel.

Personal opinion only, but I wouldn't drive 3 hours out of my way to visit Moher. There are prettier, and lord knows much less crowded, seascapes closer by. The Kerry Cliffs along the Skellig Ring and the Cliff Walk in Kilkee both come to mind.

What Robert said, every word. Slea Head was one of our favorite drives in May 2018 when we did most of the southern west coast by car. (I made a navigational error and we wound up seeing much of it twice, from the other side of the road; we were happy with my blunder, a rare occurence.) We saw Cliffs/Moher, but the Cliffs/Kerry -- with the crashing surf -- were spectacular with far fewer fellow tourists. (Get a map or reliable directions.) The village of Dingle is quaint, etc., but it's the nearby scenery that you'll remember the most.

The Cliffs of Moher ARE beautiful. However that beauty is hurt by tourist hoards, lines of tour buses and a small semi tacky strip "mall" built in its landward base. It is decidedly NOT worth the 3+ hour drive when far far better options exist. As Robert pointed out perfectly the Cliffs Of Kilkee and especially the Cliffs of Kerry are everything most people think of when they think of a rugged, barren windswept cliff with crashing waves and yet the solitude to connect to that incredible wild Ireland. Moher doesn't offer that.....it's just a name on must see lists....that truly ARE NOT must sees.

Try to check out Kerry or Kilkee (or if you happen to go to the Aran islands the amazing cliffs at Dun Anghosa) and save time to linger and enjoy the insane beauty of Dingle rather than rat racing around to the next thing.

The beauty in Ireland is in taking your time.....allowing connections with the truly special Irish people, it's beauty and its history. There are magical moments around every corner as long as your not in a car stressed about getting to the next thing. One of ours took place on Slea Head just outside of Dunquin when we stopped at a home based bakery....We ended up invited into the kitchen, shared recipes for 30-40 minutes, spoke our limited Irish and were taught more, laughed and made true friends we remain in contact with...and we are far from outgoing people. So special and light years better than racing to Moher.

Have a great trip. More than anywhere else we have traveled ....... in Ireland less really is FAR more.
