Is it worth it to visit Ireland in December? If it is, what major attractions would still be open or would be suited to winter travel? I am aware that the days are short and scenery will not look as nice as in the summer (But is does it still look good?). This is especially so in Ireland where many attractions will be about scenery (cliffs of Moher, etc.) so any suggestions for a December trip to Ireland?
Keep in mind how SHORT the days are -- it gets dark so early. Really diminishes the time one is able to spend seeing sites of natural beauty (of course, it increases the time one is able to spend in a cozy pub).
We spent December 13-16 in Dublin. Other than being exhausted with this being the end of our 3 week trip to Europe, we really enjoyed Dublin. We enjoyed it so much we tacked on another 3 nights to our UK trip in September this year.
The weather cold and windy, and it rained one day. But most of the main attractions had normal hours except for limited hours on Sunday (noon openings), and closures of the National Museums on Monday. We never had a dull moment between exploring the city center, pub hopping, and taking the DART out to Howth which was lovely and romantic even in the winter (the sunset was gorgeous!) No, there weren't any flowers but the land is as green as you imagine Ireland to be even in the dead of winter.
