Hello all - we are arriving in Dublin the morning of December 26th - planning on dropping off bags at Temple Bar area hotel than exploring. Seems like many attractions are closed that day so looking for advice on best places to go that day?
We arrived in Dublin around 7am in the summer and felt so disoriented with nothing open (because it was so early, not because of holidays) and very jet lagged from our flight from the west coast, that we decided we'd never put ourselves in that situation. So now we book our hotel for the night prior, then let the hotel know we won't be arriving until the next morning. Just being able to get into our room and freshen up gives us such a better start.
Not sure what to suggest for Dec 26 for activities. Will any of the museums be open? Book of Kells? It looks like the castle is closed.
December 26th is St. Stephen's Day and is a National Holiday in the Republic. I expect that all public institutions - museums, etc. - will be closed. But I think shops and pubs will be open.
All public transport (including the LUAS trams), except Irish Rail, will be running from 9am.
No trains will run anywhere in the Country.
Not sure what time you land, but keep in mind that sunrise on the 26th will be 8:40am.
You could walk along the Liffey, and around the outside of Dublin Castle. At the back is a pretty garden and lawn maze. Christ Church Cathedral or St. Patrick’s might be open (but might also have church services?). Walk St. Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square. Dublin is a very pleasant city for walking. Enjoy!
