Day trips from Kilkinney

Hi,

I am headed to Ireland in a couple of weeks, spending 4 days in Kilkinney and 2 days in Dublin. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for which route I should take to and from Kilkinney. I would like to drive a different route both ways to see as much of the island as I can. The other thing I was looking for is suggestions for some day trips from Kilkinney. Maybe Cork and the Cliffs of Moher?

Day 1 - Drive from Dublin to Kilkinney, spend the day in Kilkinney

Day 2 - ?

Day 3 - ?

Day 4 - Drive from Kilkinney to Dublin.

Any suggestions of things to do in Dublin?

Cheers,
Amber

Do you mean Kilkenny? If so, 4 days is a lot of time there. Do you have the option of going elsewhere?

I too was wondering why you have 4 days in Kilkenny. Are you visiting relatives or attending a conference or something?

I booked 4 days in Kilkinney thinking it was in a central enough location that I could do day trips from there without having to check in/out of a different hotel or airbnb every night.

Do you have suggestions of a better place to stay - or do you recommend staying in different areas every night?

Cheers,
Amber

Do you have 4 days total or 6? Do any of those days include travel days from/back home?

On your way to Dublin, I would highly recommend the drive through the Wicklow Mountains, with a stop at Glendalough. It's a very scenic drive. Glendalough is beautiful and the mountains are very peaceful and beautiful too. (We did this drive a few weeks ago...left Kilkenny around 9:00 a.m. and took it slow with a long stop at Glendalough to walk around and we did one of the walking trails there and we arrived in Dublin by 4:00 p.m.)

A daytrip from Kilkenny could be to Cashel. The Rock of Cashel is great and the town is nice too. It isn't too far from Kilkenny.

Have fun!

Juliejames had several good suggestions. Here are a few other options.

For a full day from Kilkenny, you could drive around the countryside to visit Kells Priory and the Kilree Round Tower and High Cross (8th/9th century) then visit Jerpoint Abbey. They are about a 30 minutes drive from Kilkenny. From there, you could continue on to Waterford (about 45 minutes from Jerpoint Abbey. Waterford has several museums, especially Viking related exhibits. Waterford isn’t a great night life town, so you could head back to Kilkenny for the evening (good restaurants and pubs).

Wexford is another nearby city (about 1.5 hours drive) with several options, including visiting Tintern Abbey or trying an outdoor adventure with sea kayaking

I enjoyed Kilkenny, but 4 nights might be a bit much if you want to see other parts of Ireland. You might devote 2 nights to Kilkenny and consider spending a night or two in Killarney or Kenmare and visiting the Rock of Cashel on your drive from Kilkenny there. While in either town, you can see several sites in the area and drive the Ring of Kerry for vistas of the Irish Coast.

If you want to see the Cliffs of Moher, they are over 3 hours drive from Kilkenny, so you may want to spend a night somewhere near the Cliffs instead of driving back to Kilkenny. Ennis and Doolin are nearby (pubs and music). Galway is about 1.5 hours.

Hope you enjoy your stay
