Day Trip Waterford / Kilkenny

After attending a family wedding, my sister, daughters (ages 9 and 7) and I will be staying on to tour Ireland. For the first part of the trip we will be staying in a rental house in Tyrellspass. I really want to see Waterford and tour the "factory." Was thinking of leaving early in the morning for the 2 hour drive down, explore Waterford and then stop in Kilkenny on the way back. Would love any advice / suggestions on what to do that day or how to make this outing better? TIA.

I really enjoyed Kilkenny castle. It takes a couple of hours to tour it. If you like to shop, Nicholas Moss has a pottery studio in I believe Thomas Town, which is nearby. Also there is a Kilkenny Design center. The town of Kilkenny is fun to walk around.

I would definitely go up the round tower at St. Canice's in Kilkenny. The town itself is really neat to walk around, and Smithwick's has a factory tour there. Grab a drink at Kyteler's Inn. If you are there around dinner time, there is a fabulous, Michelin-starred restaurant in Kilkenny (just a bit outside the very center of the town) called Campagne. They have an early bird (on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, between 6 and 7 pm) 3 course menu for 32 euros - a real value.
