Day trip to Inishmore

My wife and I are taking a ferry from Galway folks to Inishmore in early April. We both have mobility issues and therfore want to use one of the small tour buses to get around the island. Do we need to book in advance or just buy a ticket upon our arrival? Also, are these buses cash only or do they take plastic? Thanks in advance for any help.

It’s been a long time since I was on Inishmore, so things may have changed, but I recall that right at the ferry dock there were locals waiting with their own vans greeting the tourists, and offering tours for a price. It was great fun. We picked a driver, told him where we wanted to go, and were joined by three or four others. The driver was willing to hit the spots we were interested in, as well as some others, and we asked him to drop us off before we were back in town so we could walk out across the flat stone to the cliff edge. However, we got caught off guard by a sudden thunderstorm, and had to run back to town, barely avoiding the worst of the rain. I don’t know if there are more organized tours now, but I certainly enjoyed being shown around by a local. We definitely didn’t book in advance. I think the locals just show up, and see if they can find some customers.

Check out the ferry website

"As soon as you step off our ferry, you'll see a row of buses lined up along the pier .
Bus drivers wait by the ferry for your custom and introduce themselves as you arrive. They provide an authentic tour with extra insider knowledge and you’re guaranteed a couple of laughs!"

You don't need to prebook - just go and get on a bus.

There are also land rover trips and pony and trap rides around the island. These can be prebooked.

I've also seen a cooment somewhere that it is advisable to bring casxh as not all operators accept cards, although there is an ATM on the island.
