Day trip from Dublin to Galway and Cliffs of Moher in January

Hi everyone,

I am interested in a day trip from Dublin to Galway and Cliffs of Moher, it’s in January and I know late sun-up and early sun-down, is it worth it for this day trip. I’m also considering Belfast, which I’ve been to, never been to Galway or Cliffs, any advice will help, I’m really torn.

Too far of a day trip and Mother Nature might ruin any view.

Do Belfast instead, closer, easier and to be blunt Giants Causeway far more interesting than the Cliffs.

2 different countries in a day.

This may not even be an option, for any number of reasons, but is flying into Shannon Airport in the west, then making your way to the awesome Cliffs, then on to Dublin, or vice-versa, even a possibility?

Definitely too far for a day trip. How long do you have in Ireland? Flying open jaw is almost always preferable, especially for Ireland when the two airports being literally on opposite sides of the island allow for all kinds of options in between. And there are so many things to see in the west, and the east, and in between! :) I agree with previous poster who said if you haven't seen or plan to see the Giants Causeway, do that while you are in the east and save the west when you can really do it justice.
We've done two open jaw trips, driving a southerly route one time and a northerly route the next, over a week each time. We also went in February and the weather can be unkind, but we like cold and wet so we bundled up and enjoyed the complete lack of tourists (this was in the early '00s when there was still a time of year that you could avoid other tourists). We kept our days relatively short and were safely tucked in before the dark was complete. Driving on the wrong side, the weather and the early dark is not a good combination when you're unaccustomed.

Hello from Wisconsin,
Try a day trip to either Glendalough, which is to the south of Dublin and close by in the Wicklow Mountains. Or go to the north of Dublin to the Boyne River Valley to see New Grange. Either one of these has additional things to see near them so it could fill a short January day.

To drive round trip to see the 'cliffs' is just not worth it. In January you are likely to encounter cold, wet, windy. Heck, even in July you are likely to encounter cold wet, and windy, just less so. I bet January viewing would last 5 minutes.
