Day trip from Dublin in winter

My son and I will have one full day in Dublin in January (staying the night of and the night before). I am sure we could entertain ourselves in the city proper for one day, but my research is indicating that Dublin might be the most boring place in Ireland to be? I'm wondering if there are any day trips (even full day guided tour type things) that might be better? We like history and food, but as we will be doing lots of history in Spain before we get to Dublin, it doesn't necessarily need to be historical attractions. My son just is very curious about Ireland! I see day trips on Viator and the like that go to Galway, etc., but I'm not sure how well these would work in winter. Really open to suggestions. Thanks! (We won't have a car.)

I don’t know how cold the weather will be in winter, but my mom and I took a group day trip to Newgrange burial mound in autumn several years ago and we enjoyed it very much. Newgrange has a great visitor’s center with a nice cafe where we had lunch before visiting the burial mound. We were allowed to go inside the mound with a guide, which was very cool.

I disagree that Dublin is boring. We spent several days in Dublin and didn’t see everything we wanted to. Trinity College Library and the National Museum were two of my favorite places.
